Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway Updates

Disney recently gave two major updates on the upcoming Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction. We’ll cover both updates and give some of our thoughts.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway Hollywood Studios Debut Pushed to Spring 2020 (Also Rumored February 2020)

Update: WDWNT now reports that Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is on track for a February 2020 opening at Hollywood Studios.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway was originally set to open in 2019 in Hollywood Studios, but now Disney is saying it will open in spring 2020.

This isn’t surprising at all. We had gone months without hearing anything about Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, other than rumors that it was facing challenges with the trackless technology. Even if there weren’t problems developing the ride, pushing it in 2020 makes a lot of sense.

Back in 2018, it looked like Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway would open in mid-2019 before Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which many thought wouldn’t even actually open in 2019.

This would have given Hollywood Studios—and Walt Disney World overall—a nice boost while many people delayed trips until Galaxy’s Edge.

Disney surprised, though, when they announced a two-phase opening for Galaxy’s Edge, with the land and Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run attraction opening on August 29 and the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance attraction opening later (allegedly in 2019).

Disney could rush Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway in order to add to the park’s capacity, but with one huge opening in August and another later in 2019, it makes sense to spread things out and push Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway until early 2020.

This essentially gives vacationers three dates—August 29, mysterious debut date of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and spring 2020 debut date of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway to target for their trips. It also forces hardcore fans—like us—to make multiple visits.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway Coming to Disneyland in 2022

This was already a widely accepted rumor, but Disney has now confirmed that Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will come to Disneyland in 2022. The ride will be added to the Mickey’s Toontown area of the park.

We don’t have much commentary about this, except that we’re continually disappointed to see Disney copying rides across these parks.

Some highly respected commentators think that Disneyland is becoming more of a vacation destination. In our minds, though, ride duplications (and entire land duplications, in the case of Galaxy’s Edge), don’t give many people much cause to visit Disneyland rather than or even in addition to Walt Disney World.

Regardless, 2022 is a long way away, so we’re not going to give much attention to this addition until closer to then.
